Yumiko Ichikawa STILL LIFES & LANDSCAPES IN GOUACHE AND DARWINGS

Artist Statement

My artistic goal is to create a harmonious world in painting by depicting subjects in my own environment. Most of my works are based on the reality I am familiar with but are often synthesized with my imagination. These images reflect my artistic sensibilities. I am often inspired by tranquil and meditative moods in still life, landscape and portraiture. The selected images are recomposed and painted by using harmonious colors, a soft lighting, brush strokes (or no strokes) to express my inner ideal world in painting.

Gouache (opaque watercolor) has been my main medium for nearly 10 years. Gouache has a matte color of pastel, a heavy body of oil, and a watercolor fluidity that suits my painting style. Charcoal is my favorite addition to my recent work. I am attracted by its monochromatic expressions of line, texture, and its delicate touches to the paper.

My still lifes (bird's eye view compositions) are the continuous themes I have been painting for over 15 years. The main idea for this series is the contrast of geometric shapes with organic ones. Those contrasting shapes often represent man-made objects versus natural ones. Detailed patterns add almost religious energy. The gouache medium helps to build up volume of objects in the painting.

My landscapes are mostly from my home environment. I paint my backyard, views from my studio and drive around the area to look for the right images. I am surrounded by the beauty of abundant nature in Virginia. The early morning and the evening are my favorite times of the day. The lighting effects in sunrise and sunset are sublime and inspiring.

My figurative drawings are an expression of emotions and moods. Although the drawings are depicted realistically, the main emphasis is the psychology and the mood of the sitter. The sensuous touches of charcoal serve this purpose well. The paper is often painted with gouache or acrylics in color before drawing with charcoal medium.
